Back in ‘95 I remember going to the movies with my brother to watch this Whoopi Goldberg movie called Eddie. In one of the scenes, NBA ball player Malik Sealy (RIP btw) invites Eddie (Whoopi) into the room and Tell Me was playing in the background. My brother was like, “Yo, I didn’t know Jodeci dropped a new song!!?” Personally thought it was H-Town trying to comeback. We both didn’t really care about the movie after that scene (..cuz the shit was kinda garb anyway), so we went to Sam Goody to find the soundtrack to see who was right. Now around this time period, Movie Soundtracks were the staple to showcase new artists that were recently signed to majors back in the day..
So when we saw Dru Hill on the tracklisting, I was stumped! “Who the hell is Dru Hill?” The dude at the cash register was like, “Ya’ll watched that Eddie movie huh? That shit sucked but that track is DOPE! They’re actually dropping their album in few weeks.”
..One of THEE best albums I ever bought.
From front to back, the shit was flawless. Vocal arrangements, songwriting, strong harmonies, timeless melodies, and thick ass production.. you just felt these cats when they sang! For the longest time it was either you’re Boyz II Men fan or a Jodeci fan, but these cats were the best of both worlds. Boyz II Men’s artistic vocal arrangement and content but with a Jodeci’s strong soulful harmonies and hip hop influence. I was a Dru Hill fan!
Enter The Dru was strong follow up and classic in it’s own right, but when Woody left the group to pursue his solo efforts, it wasn’t the same.. Sure Scola, and Tao were solid replacements but the original 4 was the best line up. If you’re a R&B lover cop the 1st Dru Hill album.. you’ll thank me later!
